EMERGENCY ACTIONS

BACKFLOW - ACTIONS
• Notify Drinking Water Officer, Vancouver Coastal Health
• Notify water users, to boil water for two minutes or take other disinfection procedures in accordance with recommendation of local health officials
• After repairs, purge and disinfect lines as directed

CONTAMINATION OF WATER - ACTIONS
• Operator to shut down pump
• Notify Drinking Water Officer, Vancouver Coastal Health
• Notify water users either to not drink the water, or to boil first
  ADDITIONAL CONTACTS, depending on severity:
• Provincial Emergency Preparedness
• Police
• Ministry of Environment

EARTHQUAKE - ACTIONS
• Get to safety, and assess damage
• Follow protocols related to damage incurred

FIRE - ACTION
• Call 9-1-1

LOSS OF WATER (dry well) - ACTIONS
• Operator to ensure pump is shut off, to protect pump
• Contact well driller for advice & assistance
• Notify Drinking Water Officer, Vancouver Coastal Health
• Notify water users about interruption of water
• Arrange alternate source; e.g. bottled water, bulk hauler, storage tank

LOW RESERVOIR (loss of pressure) - ACTIONS
• Check the generator and pumps
• If unable to rectify immediately, notify Drinking Water Officer, Vancouver Coastal Health
• Notify water users about low-level water reservoir
• Arrange alternate source; e.g. bottled water, bulk hauler, storage tank

MEDICAL - ACTION
• Call 9-1-1

POSITIVE COLIFORM COUNT - ACTIONS
• Consult health authority
• Flush & resample as per his direction
• Check for backflow
  IF 2nd POSITIVE COLIFORM COUNT
• Consult health authority and follow directions

POWER FAILURE (generator) - ACTIONS
• Start up alternate generator
• Call generator mechanic, and/or electrician, and arrange for repairs
• Arrange alternate source; e.g. bottled water, bulk hauler, storage tank

PUMP FAILURE - ACTIONS
• Determine which pump has failed, by watching the water meters to see if they are spinning when a pump activates
• Change the pump selection switch to the working pump
• Contact well driller for advice and assistance to repair or replace pump
• If both pumps have failed, arrange alternate source, e.g. bottled water or bulk hauler, and contact well driller

SECURITY BREACH - vandalism, tampering, unauthorized access - ACTIONS
• Vandalism: Call RCMP, check equipment and buildings for damage
• Equipment tampering: Call RCMP, and monitor distribution system for failures
• Water tampering: Call RCMP, issue Boil Water Advisory, and test water
• Unauthorized access: Identify the individuals; communicate with them or call RCMP
  PREVENTIVE ACTIONS
• Access to the wells, tanks, generators, and storage should be restricted by locks
• Ensure personnel know how to turn on and off the generators and the water supply system
• Ensure all equipment and chemicals are stored securely, using health and safety practices
• Ensure the building that houses the equipment is a safe structure
• Install motion-sensor lights and security alarms if they are available
• Install a smoke detector, and change the batteries annually
• Regularly back-up data, computer files and log books, and store copies offsite

TURBIDITY - ACTIONS
• Identify source and location of the turbidity and remedy situation
• Notify Drinking Water Officer, Vancouver Coastal Health
• Notify water users of any direction from Drinking Water Officer

WATER MAIN BREAK - ACTIONS
• Reduce pressure, but maintain enough pressure to prevent backflow.
• Call for repairs; e.g. plumber, excavator.
• Notify water users about interruption of water
• Notify Drinking Water Officer, Vancouver Coastal Health
• Arrange alternate source; e.g. bottled water, bulk hauler, storage tank
